Sleep Apnea: Who is at Risk?

Sleep apnea can affect anyone at any age.  However, there are certain factors that can increase your risk of developing this common condition.  Here are a few factors that can influence your risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea Risk:

  • Weight – About half of all of the people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea are overweight.  However, this is not the only factor that plays a role in your risk.  Thin people can develop sleep apnea too.
  • Narrow Airway – You may have inherited a naturally narrow throat or your tonsils are enlarged.  This can block your airway.
  • Gender – Men are twice as likely as women to have sleep apnea.  However, the risk increases in women after menopause.
  • Age – Sleep apnea is more common in adults over the age of 60.
  • Smoking – Smokers are three times more likely to have sleep apnea.  Smoke can increase inflammation and fluid retention.

For more information on the factors that play a role in your chances of developing sleep apnea, visit the US Department of Health & Human Services website.
