Gum Disease Risk Factors

iStock_000024327786_FullPeriodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, ranges from simple inflammation to a serious disease that damages the soft tissue and bone.  While it is common in adults, there are certain factors that increase the likelihood of gum disease affecting your smile.

Risk Factors:

  • Smoking – This is one of the most significant risk factors associated with the development of gum disease.
  • Hormones – Hormonal changes in girls and women can make gums more sensitive and make it easier for gingivitis to develop.
  • Diabetes – People with diabetes are at a greater risk of developing infections, including gum disease.
  • Medication Use – Prescription and over-the-counter medications can reduce the flow of saliva.  Without enough saliva, the mouth is susceptible to gum disease and infection.
  • Genetics – Some people have a genetic disposition to developing severe gum disease.

Summer Dental Emergencies

iStock_000033755750_DoubleOutdoor summer activities are fun, but they can also leave you prone to injury.  Knowing how to prevent and manage a dental emergency can help save an injured or damaged tooth.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind when spending time outdoors on summer vacation.

Tooth Emergency Tips:

  • Lost Tooth – If you have lost a tooth, place it in a glass of milk.  Take the tooth with you to the emergency room and apply an ice pack to minimize any swelling.  The sooner the tooth is re-inserted, the better the chance the tooth will survive.
  • Fractured Tooth – Rinse your mouth with warm water after breaking a tooth.  Apply a cold compress to reduce any swelling.
  • Wedged Object – Have something stuck in between your teeth?  Try to remove it with floss.  If this doesn’t work, visit our office.
  • Loose Tooth – A loose tooth may reattach on its own, but you should always visit the dentist for a consultation.  We can make sure that the root of the tooth is not dying and reattaches properly.
  • Toothache – Try brushing and flossing to ease the pain.  If it still hurts, stick to soft foods or try an over-the-counter pain killer.

If you experience any dental emergencies this summer, visit our office!  At Perfect Smile Maker, we can help you with all of your dental needs.  Call 516-482-2215 to schedule your consultation.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Single_crown_implantIt’s no surprise that so many patients love the realistic look and feel of dental implants.  They are one of the best ways to replace a missing, damaged or extracted tooth.  Here are just a few of the reasons as to why dental implants are such a great way to restore your smile. Benefits of Dental Implants:

  • Permanent – Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime.  Since they are attached directly to your jawbone, they act as a long lasting tooth replacement option.
  • Aesthetics – Each implant is custom designed to match the color, shape, and texture of your natural teeth.
  • Simple Care – Dental implants do not require any special maintenance.  Regular brushing, flossing, and dental cleanings is all that is needed to keep your smile healthy.
  • Natural – Unlike bridges, dental implants are a standalone restoration.  There is no need to alter any of the surrounding teeth.
Are you interested in restoring your smile with a dental implant?  We encourage you to learn more about this restorative dental service on our website or by calling our office at 516-482-2215.  Perfect Smile Maker can help you determine if you are a good candidate for a dental implant.

The Benefits of Oral Appliance Therapy

Sleep apnea is a frustrating condition that can affect your overall health and leave you feeling tired.  While CPAP machines are commonly used to treat sleep apnea, patients often find them to be uncomfortable.  Oral appliance therapy is an effective alternative treatment that allows patients to correct obstructive sleep apnea in a way that is both comfortable and convenient. Here are a few of the benefits to this alternative treatment:tap3
  • Comfortable
  • Easy to Wear
  • Custom Design
  • High Compliance Rate
  • Improved Sleeping Habits
  • Reduced Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke
If you have intolerance to CPAP, contact Perfect Smile Maker.  We can help you treat sleep apnea and improve the overall quality of your life.  By repositioning the lower jaw, tongue, soft palate and uvula with an oral appliance, you can treat sleep apnea without a loud, uncomfortable and intrusive CPAP machine.  Call 516-482-2215 to schedule an appointment to discuss your options and finally find relief.

Teeth Whitening Benefits

It’s no surprise that teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry services.  Coffee, soda, smoking and aging can all cause unwanted discoloration.  While there are several over-the-counter whitening trays, toothpastes, and strips, the best way to find dramatic and lasting results is with custom teeth whitening trays. Benefits of Teeth Whitening:
  • Confidence – When people are happy with the appearance of their smile, they are more likely to feel confident when smiling and talking to others.
  • Long Lasting – Custom teeth whitening trays are designed for your unique smile.  They are reusable and can keep your smile bright for a long time to come.
  • Oral Health – When people are happier with the appearance of their smile they are more likely to keep it that way with regular brushing and flossing.  Even though teeth whitening is a cosmetic service, it can have health benefits too!
  • Anti-Aging – Teeth whitening is a great way to create a more youthful appearance.
  • Restorations – Are you looking to restore the appearance of your smile with a crown or veneers?  Many patients opt for teeth whitening procedures prior to their restoration.  The restorations are then customized to match your bright new smile.
These are just a few of the benefits teeth whitening can have for your smile.  Call 516-482-2215 to learn more about the professional teeth whitening services at Perfect Smile Maker.  We are happy to help you determine if teeth whitening is the right cosmetic dental service for your smile.  Present a copy of this attached coupon at your initial visit for $100 off of your teeth whitening system.

Emergency Dental Care Tips

Man_with_a_toothache. A chipped, cracked, lost, or painful tooth can be frustrating.  It can even keep you from being able to sleep, eat and function properly throughout the day.  That’s why it’s so important to seek emergency care from a dentist that you know and trust.  Here are a few tips to help you handle dental emergencies until you can get to the dentist. Emergency Care Tips:

  • Toothaches – Rinse your mouth with warm water.  You can also use floss to remove lodged food or apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth.
  • Chipped Tooth – Save the pieces and rinse your mouth with warm water.  Apply a cold compress until you can get to the office.
  • Lost Tooth – Rinse off the tooth, but do not scrub it.  Try to put the tooth back in place without forcing it into the socket.  If you can’t reinsert it, place the tooth in a cup of milk with a pinch of salt.  Getting to the dental office within the hour gives you the best chance of saving the tooth.
  • Objects Stuck – Use dental floss to gently dislodge the object.  Never use a sharp object.
  • Lost Crown – You can ease tooth pain by applying a small amount of clove oil to the area with a cotton swab until you can get to the dentist.
  • Soft Tissue Injury – If your tongue, cheeks, gums and lips are bleeding, rinse your mouth with a mil salt-water solution.  Apply pressure with a moistened piece of gauze – if the bleeding doesn’t stop, visit the dentist for treatment.
In all cases, it is essential to schedule a visit to the dentist.  At Perfect Smile Maker, we take care of dental emergencies and urgent situations ASAP.  Call 516-482-2215 if you are experiencing a dental emergency or visit our website for more information on our Great Neck practice.

What is a Dental Implant?

Do you have a missing or extracted tooth?  Dental implants are one of the most realistic tooth replacement options available to you.  While we offer several restorative dental services at our office, dental implants offer a real look and feel that many patients love. Dental implants are connected directly to the jaw bone, functioning just like a natural tooth.  The restoration is made up of three parts:
  • Titanium Implant – The implant is attached directly to the jaw bone.  Through a process known as osseointegration, the jaw conforms to the base of the implant.  This securely holds the restoration in place and acts as the root of the tooth.
  • Abutment – The abutment attaches the implant base to the custom crown.
  • Crown – Each crown is custom created to match the shape, color and texture of your natural smile.  The crown provides patients with a natural appearance that looks and feels real.
Learn more about dental implants here. It is important that patients with missing teeth take the time to restore their smile.  Missing teeth can increase your risk of periodontal disease, bone loss and tooth misalignment.  Visit our website for more information or contact our office to schedule a consultation by calling 516-482-2215.  We can help you determine whether or not you are a good candidate for dental implants.
