iStock_000028928360_LargeDental implants are one of the best ways to create a beautiful, long lasting smile.  This restorative dental service improves your smile appearance, blends in naturally, and restores your oral health.  If you are interested in restoring your smile with dental implants, you may want to learn more about what the implant placement process entails.  Here’s what you can expect from your dental implant procedure at Perfect Smile Maker.

Dental Implant Procedure:
  • Schedule Your Consultation - The first step in your dental implant process is scheduling a consultation at our office.  During your initial visit, Stewart Brody, DDS will evaluate, assess and discuss what will be involved in your treatment.
  • Dental Implant Placement - Your second visit involves placing the base of the implant.  While using local anesthesia, the implant is attached to your jaw bone through a surgical procedure.  This ensures the stability and longevity of your new tooth.
  • Healing Period - It can take three to six months for the implant to fully heal.  During this time, the jaw bone heals around the implant, securing it in place.
  • Placing Your Custom Cap - After the implant is fully integrated, the implant is uncovered.  A custom crown is attached to your implant and it blends in naturally with the rest of your smile.
Dental Implants are a great tooth replacement choice for one or several missing or damaged teeth.  To learn more about the benefits of dental implants and what the procedure entails, visit our website or contact our office by calling 516-782-2215.  At Perfect Smile Maker, we can help you determine if dental implants are the right solution for your smile.

What Happens When You Lose a Tooth?

Dentist surgeryDo you have a missing tooth?  Don’t worry!  Whether your tooth loss was accidental or a result of tooth decay, there are several options available to you.  We offer several dental services that can help restore the appearance and health of your smile.

Restoration Options:
  • Crowns – If part of your tooth stays in tact, you may be able to restore it with a crown.  Dental crowns sit on top of your tooth, hold it together and protect it from decay.  Dental crowns can even be custom designed to blend in with the natural appearance of your smile.
  • Bridges - This restorative completely replaces a lost tooth.  Bridges rest on top of your gum and use the surrounding teeth for support.  They are a great choice for lost molars that sit in the back of your smile.
  • Partial Dentures - This option is great for patients who have lost one or several teeth.  The partial dentures also sit on top of your gums, but unlike bridges, they can be removed.
  • Dental Implants -  Since dental implants are attached to your jaw bone, they provide the most natural look and feel of all the restorative options.  There is no need to alter your eating, drinking, or oral hygiene habits to manage your new implant.  However, not everyone is a candidate for dental implants and some healing time is required.
Visit our website to learn more about our restorative dental services or call 516-482-2215 to schedule a consultation.  At our office, Dr. Stewart Brody can help you determine the best restorative solution for your smile.

Should You Get a Dental Implant?

Dental implantA missing tooth is more than a cosmetic issue – it can have a serious effect on your oral health too.  Missing teeth can cause misalignment and make your mouth more prone to cavities.  Whether you experienced accidental tooth loss or you recently had a tooth extracted, it’s important to take steps to restore your smile.

While there are several restorative options available to you, dental implants are often the favored tooth replacement option.  They are custom designed to match the natural shape and shade of your smile.  Their stability also makes them a comfortable choice, requiring minimal adjustment to your oral hygiene routine.

While dental implants are a great choice for most patients, they are not for everyone.  We do not always recommend dental implants when you:

    • are a heavy smoker
    • have a weakened immune system
    • have diabetes
    • grind your teeth at night
    • your teeth are not fully mature (children)
You can read this article or visit our website for more information on whether or not you are a good candidate for dental implants.  If you are a missing a tooth, call 516-482-2215 to contact Perfect Smile Maker for your dental implant consultation.  Stewart Brody, DDS will help you determine the best restorative solution for your smile.

Dental Implants vs. Dentures: Which is the Right Choice for your Smile?

asdfDental implants and dentures are among the most popular restorative options available to patients with missing or extracted teeth.  While they are both a great way to replace a smile gap and improve your oral health, each dental service has its own unique benefits.  Here are a few of the main differences between dental implant procedures and denture procedures.

Implants vs. Dentures:

  • Placement Process
    • Dental Implants – Dental implants are unique in that they are attached directly to your jawbone.  This provides stability that many other restoratives don’t have.
    • Dentures – During your first appointment, an impression is taken of your jaw and tooth structure.  A mold is then created and a final cast is custom designed for your smile.
  • Recovery Time
    • Dental Implants – The jaw bone needs to heal around the implant after placement.  This process, known as osseo-integration, may take anywhere from 3-6 months to complete.
    • Dentures – Immediate dentures are placed immediately after tooth extraction and are adjusted periodically as your gums heal.  Conventional dentures are placed after your gums have healed, approximately six to eight weeks after extraction.
  • Longevity
    • Dental Implants – Dental implants are a more expensive option.  However, they are designed to last a lifetime.
    • Dentures – This restorative is often more affordable.  Since they are removable, they may be lost or need adjustments over time.
  • Appearance
    • Dental Implants – Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth or several teeth.  However, each implant stands alone.  Implants are designed to look and feel just like a natural tooth.
    • Dentures – Dentures are custom designed for your smile, but they are removable.

How To Care for Your Dental Implants

asdfDental implants are one of the best ways to replace missing or damaged teeth.  With good care, your new dental implant is designed to last a lifetime.   Here are a few tips to help keep your dental implant healthy following your procedure.

Implant Care Tips:

  • Mouthwash – Immediately following your implant procedure, we recommend that you use Chlorhexidine Gluconate Mouthwash to reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth.  This helps reduce the risk of post-operative infection.
  • Diet – After your procedure, you want to be careful with your implant.  The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends a diet of soft foods, cold foods, and warm soup.
  • Brushing – Until your permanent crown is implanted, you will need to care for your abutment with a small toothbrush.
  • Bi-Annual Visits – You should always schedule dental checkups twice a year to make sure that your smile is healthy.

After your dental implant has fully healed, you will be able to treat it just like any of your other natural teeth.  With regular brushing, flossing, and biannual dental exams and cleanings, your smile will be healthy and your dental implant will be long-lasting.

There are many ways to restore the health and beauty of your smile.  While dental implants are generally the best available treatment for those with missing teeth, they can also be used to treat a number of other oral health conditions.  So how do you know if dental implants are the right restorative solution for your dental needs?

Here are a few common problems that implants can treat:

  • Missing Teeth
  • Locally Diseased Gums
  • Damaged Teeth
  • Root Canal Failure
  • Traumatic Facial Injuries
  • Congenital Dental Defects

Dental implants are a great alternative to traditional treatments for missing teeth.  Unlike crowns and bridges, they are a permanent fixture in your smile.  Dental implants are designed to look and feel just like a natural part of your smile.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Single_crown_implantIt’s no surprise that so many patients love the realistic look and feel of dental implants.  They are one of the best ways to replace a missing, damaged or extracted tooth.  Here are just a few of the reasons as to why dental implants are such a great way to restore your smile. Benefits of Dental Implants:

  • Permanent – Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime.  Since they are attached directly to your jawbone, they act as a long lasting tooth replacement option.
  • Aesthetics – Each implant is custom designed to match the color, shape, and texture of your natural teeth.
  • Simple Care – Dental implants do not require any special maintenance.  Regular brushing, flossing, and dental cleanings is all that is needed to keep your smile healthy.
  • Natural – Unlike bridges, dental implants are a standalone restoration.  There is no need to alter any of the surrounding teeth.

What is a Dental Implant?

Do you have a missing or extracted tooth?  Dental implants are one of the most realistic tooth replacement options available to you.  While we offer several restorative dental services at our office, dental implants offer a real look and feel that many patients love. Dental implants are connected directly to the jaw bone, functioning just like a natural tooth.  The restoration is made up of three parts:
  • Titanium Implant – The implant is attached directly to the jaw bone.  Through a process known as osseointegration, the jaw conforms to the base of the implant.  This securely holds the restoration in place and acts as the root of the tooth.
  • Abutment – The abutment attaches the implant base to the custom crown.
  • Crown – Each crown is custom created to match the shape, color and texture of your natural smile.  The crown provides patients with a natural appearance that looks and feels real.
Learn more about dental implants here. It is important that patients with missing teeth take the time to restore their smile.  Missing teeth can increase your risk of periodontal disease, bone loss and tooth misalignment.  Visit our website for more information or contact our office to schedule a consultation by calling 516-482-2215.  We can help you determine whether or not you are a good candidate for dental implants.

Dental Implants – why they are the standard of teeth replacements

One of the question’s I hear every day is “are dental implants worth it?” The short answer to this question is OF COURSE THEY ARE! If you do any search on Google you will find countless articles telling you the same thing such as here at the AARP and at Real-Self – one of the most well-respected medical communities on the internet. But if you want to read a real dentist’s review of dental implants you’ve come to the right place. Dental implants offer an excellent alternative to traditional tooth replacement procedures such as dentures and crowns, and are the preferred method of tooth replacement today. Here in Great Neck, NY many of us take better care of our teeth but it’s been estimated that at some point during our adult lives 70% of the population will loose at least one tooth. We are very lucky that there is a procedure such as dental Implants available to make sure that if you lose a tooth; it can be replaced and still look good and  be comfortable. So why are dental implants so great? Dental implants use anchors that are put into the gum-line and a professional cosmetic implant is created that fits your mouth perfectly to go on top of these anchors. They are much more secure and comfortable than removable dentures. Dentures, which were the traditional treatment for tooth replacement, have a tendency to wiggle, they can be very noticeable, and you need to remove them to clean them effectively; additionally, they require frequent visits to your dentist to maintain healthy oral hygiene. On the other hand, dental implants are secure, will last YEARS, can be cared for as if they are your own teeth, are stain resistant and require only the normal dental visits to maintain oral health. Dental implants can be used to treat single missing teeth or multiple teeth; plus just about everyone is eligible for dental implants. Dental implants essentially become your teeth and no special care is needed besides normal brushing and flossing. A good analogy to use to compare dental implants to dentures is buying a car. Dental implants can be more costly than dentures upfront but you are paying for quality and comfort, and there will be little maintenance costs associated with your implants. Implants are like buying a Lexus. Dentures on the other hand are very reliable and have been used for years; however, they are higher maintenance and will require more frequent visits to your dentist. Dentures are more like buying a Nissan. Nissan makes a great car, but they are not a Lexus. If you are considering a dental procedure to replace a missing tooth or teeth you should consult your dentist before you make any decision. If you would like to make an appointment at my office please visit http://perfectsmilemaker.com/office.htm and fill out the form, or call 516-482-2215. I hope this clarifies some of the differences between dental implants and dentures, and will allow you to have realistic expectations about each procedure. I look forward to answering any questions you may have.
